Sun Peaks is a mountain village in British Columbia, Canada, located northeast of Kamloops in the interior region of the province. The community is built around Sun Peaks Resort, one of Canada’s largest ski destinations, but the area also functions as a year-round alpine village with hiking trails, mountain biking routes, and access to surrounding forests. The village center is compact and walkable, with lodges, cafés, and shops arranged around pedestrian streets. The setting combines high-elevation terrain, open ski slopes, and evergreen forests shaped by the dry climate of British Columbia’s interior mountains.

The identity of Sun Peaks is closely connected to outdoor recreation and mountain culture. Local events often focus on skiing, cycling, music, and seasonal festivals that bring together residents and visitors from across western Canada. The area is also connected to the traditions of the Secwépemc people, whose territory includes the surrounding region. Architectural styles in the village reflect alpine influences, with timber lodges and chalet-style buildings designed for snowy winters. Community life changes noticeably with the seasons, shifting from ski activity in winter to biking, hiking, and golf during warmer months.

The landscape around Sun Peaks includes three mountains - Tod Mountain, Sundance Mountain, and Morrisey Mountain - which are connected through the resort’s trail and lift network. In winter, the area is known for wide groomed runs, glade skiing, and cross-country trails that extend through nearby forests. Summer brings access to downhill mountain biking courses, alpine hiking routes, and chairlift rides with views over the Thompson-Nicola region. McGillivray Lake and Heffley Lake are located nearby, adding fishing and paddling opportunities to the area’s outdoor activities. Wildlife such as deer, black bears, and marmots are regularly seen around the trails.
