Fort William

Fort William, located on the western edge of the Scottish Highlands, is often referred to as the “Outdoor Capital of the UK,” but there’s more here than rugged landscapes. Ben Nevis draws hikers from across the world, but visitors don’t need to climb to its summit to experience the scenery. The Nevis Range Mountain Gondola offers a more relaxed way up Aonach Mòr, providing sweeping views of the Great Glen and distant lochs. In winter, this same gondola gives access to ski and snowboard slopes. Not far from town, Glen Nevis offers film fans a familiar view, scenes from *Braveheart*, *Harry Potter*, and *Highlander* were all filmed in this dramatic valley.

Fort William’s railway station is the departure point for one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. The Jacobite Steam Train, known to many as the “Hogwarts Express,” travels across the Glenfinnan Viaduct and through the Highlands to Mallaig on the coast. The viaduct itself, completed in 1901, is a marvel of Victorian engineering and draws photographers and fans alike, especially during the summer steam season.

Local dining reflects Highland traditions with modern touches. Venison, smoked salmon, and freshly caught seafood feature heavily on menus. The Crannog Seafood Restaurant, located in a former bait shed on the town pier, serves dishes like Isle of Mull scallops and West Coast langoustines with a view of Loch Linnhe. For whisky, the Ben Nevis Distillery offers guided tastings and a look into the area’s long-running connection to Scotland’s national drink, with distilling on this site since 1825.
